How does a cell phone signal booster work?

A cell phone signal amplifier system for large areas is made up of four major components:

  1. A cell phone signal amplifier and power supply.
  2. An outside donor antenna.
  3. An inside broadcast antenna.
  4. Coax cables that connect the antennas to the amplifier.

Cell phone signal amplifier

The cell phone signal amplifier—sometimes called a booster—is the core component of the system.

The amplifier is bi-directional: It amplifies both the signal your phone receives from the tower and the signal your phone sends to the tower. A weak cell signal is received by the outside antenna and amplified by the booster; the strengthened signal is then rebroadcasted by the inside antenna to your phone. The amplifier also boosts the connection back to the cell tower. (There still has to be some cell signal for the booster to amplify, though; it cannot “multiply zero”).

The most convenient spot to place the cell phone signal amplifier is in an I.T. closet, network box, attic, or garage; this will keep it out of sight, but still accessible if you need to make any changes to the system. The location you select to install the amplifier needs to have a 110-volt AC wall outlet nearby (typically within 6 feet) to plug in the amplifier’s power supply.

Outside donor antenna

The donor antenna communicates with your wireless carrier’s cell tower. It’s typically mounted on a pole on the roof of the building, clear of any surrounding obstacles.

Some donor antennas are directional, meaning they need to be pointed toward the strongest nearby cell tower. Typically you’ll choose a directional antenna if your building is in a remote location with one distant cell tower providing weak outside signal.

An omnidirectional antenna picks up signals from multiple cell towers in different directions. Usually you’ll choose an omni antenna if your building is in an area with several surrounding towers, and especially if you have plenty of outside cell signal that just isn’t penetrating inside your building.

The outside antenna needs to be placed with adequate separation from the inside antenna(s), and, if you’re using a directional antenna, not pointing toward your inside antenna(s) so their signals overlap. Without adequate separation, the outside and inside antennas may conflict with each other (a condition known as oscillation), which will cause the amplifier to reset or shut itself off.

Inside broadcast antenna

The broadcast antenna communicates with cell phones inside the building. It’s typically mounted on a ceiling or a wall.

A dome antenna is mounted on the ceiling, and broadcasts its signal downward in a 360° pattern. Domes work best in situations where the ceiling is level with the floor (not angled), low enough to be reached with a ladder, and where there is access above the ceiling to attach coax cable to the antenna. Domes typically provide the best signal coverage, and are also less noticeable than panel antennas.

A panel antenna is mounted on a wall, and broadcasts its signal forward, away from the panel, in a beam 60–70° wide. Panels work best in situations where a dome antenna is not easy to install or would not be horizontal to the floor, or where pulling cable through walls and ceilings is not an option. Panels can be concealed in recessed areas behind drywall.

Basic cell phone signal amplifier kits usually include one broadcast antenna. Larger, more complex buildings with custom-designed systems have multiple inside broadcast antennas that cover more area.

Lengths of coax cable connect the donor antenna and the broadcast antenna(s) to the cell phone signal amplifier.

Any signal sent through a cable is going to result in attenuation (signal loss). Since the objective of installing a cell phone signal amplifier system is to increase signal, the length and type of cable in the system is an important consideration.

Commercial and large-home systems use 400-type coax cable or plenum coax cable, terminated with N-connectors. These cables are very thick and have very low signal loss, which makes them ideal for long runs from the amplifier to the antenna (sometimes hundreds of feet). They are, however, very rigid, so they’re not well-suited for use around corners and in tight spaces. These types of cables are often used by professional installers.

Small home amplifier systems typically use RG6 coax cable, terminated with F-connectors, the same found in everyday cable and satellite TV systems. Compared to 400 coax, RG6 has more than twice the signal loss per foot, but it is also much thinner and easier for consumers to work with. (Homeowners who need long runs of cable might want to consider using RG11 coax cable with F-connectors; RG11 is more rigid and expensive than RG6, but has much lower signal loss.)

Single-room amplifiers often use RG58 coax cable with SMA-connectors. This is the thinnest cable for in-building systems. Because of its high signal loss (60% greater than RG6), it’s suitable only for the shortest runs.

Optional components

The four parts above are all that’s required for a complete cell phone signal amplifier system. Other components can protect or enhance a system:

  • A lightning surge protector insulates the amplifier against a sudden electrical surge from a lightning strike to the donor antenna.
  • Splitters and couplers divide the signal from an amplifier to two or more broadcast antennas, expanding the signal coverage inside your building. (These should only be used with commercial or large-home amplifiers, and where there is adequate outside signal.)
  • Attenuators can be used when the outside signal is so strong that it’s overwhelming the amplifier. (These should only be used with professionally-installed commercial amplifiers.)

Warranty Information

weBoost signal boosters and kits are warranted for two (2) years against defects in workmanship and/or materials. Warranty cases may be resolved by returning the product directly to the reseller with a dated proof of purchase. See reseller warranty procedures. Signal boosters and kits may also be returned directly to the manufacturer at the consumer's expense, with a dated proof of purchase and a returned material authorization (RMA) number supplied by weBoost. weBoost shall, at its option, either repair or replace the product. weBoost will pay for delivery of the repaired or replaced product back to the original consumer if located within the continental U.S. This warranty does not apply to any signal boosters or kits determined by weBoost to have been subjected to misuse, abuse, neglect, or mishandling that alters or damages physical or electronic properties. Failure to use a surge-protected AC power strip with at least a 1000 Joule rating will void your warranty. All weBoost products that are packaged with other weBoost accessory products are intended for resale and use as a single unit, and such product kits are required to be sold to the end user or subsequent reseller as packaged. The "de-kitting" and sale as a standalone product of any one or more components of such a product kit is in violation of weBoost's warranty. No "de-kitted" product will be eligible for return for any reason. The sale of separate, not-kitted cable, antennas, and other accessories is allowed and fully warranted.
