How does a vehicle cell phone signal booster work?

A vehicle cell phone signal booster system is made up of four major components:

  1. Cell phone signal booster and power supply.
  2. Outside CB-mount and magnet-mount antennas.
  3. Inside broadcast antennas (2).
  4. Coax cable that connects the antennas to the booster.

Cell phone signal booster

The cell phone signal booster—sometimes called an amplifier—is the core component of the system.

The booster is bi-directional: It amplifies both the signal your phone receives from the tower and the signal your phone sends to the tower. A weak cell signal is received by the outside antenna and amplified by the booster; the strengthened signal is then rebroadcasted by the inside antenna to your phone. The amplifier also boosts the connection back to the cell tower.

A high-quality weBoost booster from Wilson Electronics has very high receiver sensitivity, meaning it can process a weaker cell signal than your phone by itself. There still has to be some cell signal for the booster to amplify, though (it cannot "multiply zero").

The cell phone signal booster may be placed anywhere inside your RV that has convenient access to a 12-volt "cigarette lighter" power port, into which you'll plug the booster's power supply.

Two sets of antennas: RV and automobile

This kit contains two sets of antennas: one to install in your RV, and a second to install in your car or other personal vehicle. You can move the booster and power supply from the RV to the car and enjoy the benefits of stronger cell phone signal in either vehicle.

Install #1: the outside RV antenna

The outside antenna communicates with your wireless carrier's cell tower. The Wilson 304415 4G OTR truck antenna is omnidirectional, meaning it collects and broadcasts signal in a 360-degree pattern around your RV, locating and communicating with the strongest cell tower.

This antenna has two extensions, allowing you to choose a mast height of 17, 32, or 45 inches. You may use the side-cable base with all three configurations, or the spring base with the 17- and 32-inch configurations. The OTR antenna attaches to your RV's rear ladder or other horizontal or vertical bar with a standard CB mount (included). The antenna should be placed at least 12 inches from any other antennas and at least 6 inches from any windows (including sun roofs)—if it's too close to a glass surface, the outside and inside antennas may conflict with each other (a condition known as oscillation), which will cause the amplifier to shut itself off.

Install #2: the inside RV antenna

The inside antenna communicates with cell phones in your RV. The wall-mounted panel antenna transmits signal in a 70° "teardrop" shape, communicating with phones in front of it, up to around 6 feet away (depending on the outside signal strength).

This antenna may be mounted on the wall in the dining area or sleeping area of your RV, depending on where you want to receive amplified cellular signal.

Install #3: the outside car antenna

This kit contains an outside antenna for use with your car or other personal vehicle. The Wilson 301126 4G 4" magnet mount outside antenna attaches easily and firmly to your car's roof. The metal roof of the car separates the outside and inside antennas, allowing them to perform properly. This antenna should be placed away from windows and sun roofs to avoid oscillation.

Install #4: the inside car antenna

The inside antenna for your car is the Wilson 314401 4G low-profile antenna. It is omnidirectional, and will communicate with any phones within a short radius. It has an adhesive Velcro backing that makes it easy to mount inside your personal vehicle.

This antenna should be mounted 18 to 36 inches from where your cell phone will be used—the dashboard or the side of the driver or passenger seat are both good areas. It should be mounted in a vertical position, not horizontal or flat. It should not be mounted on metal, on the ceiling, or on the door pillars.

Coax cable

Both sets of outside and inside antennas have coax cables attached to them. These cables connect the antennas to the cell phone signal booster.

The outside and inside auto antennas use thin RG174 and 100-type coax cables; these are attached to the antenna on one end and have an SMA connector on the other end. The cable length is about 10 feet for each antenna. These cables should be run from the outside of the vehicle to the door or window closest to where the booster is located. Run it over the door frame or RV window frame and tuck it under interior plastic molding or the rubber weatherstripping in the door jamb. Be sure to keep the cable clear of seat slides and other parts inside the RV which could cut the cable.

The outside and inside RV antenna use thicker RG58 and 240-type coax cable. Run these from the OTR antenna and from the wall-mounted panel antenna to the booster, concealing them beneath carpet or interior trim where possible.

weBoost signal boosters and kits are warranted for two (2) years against defects in workmanship and/or materials. Warranty cases may be resolved by returning the product directly to the reseller with a dated proof of purchase. See reseller warranty procedures. Signal boosters and kits may also be returned directly to the manufacturer at the consumer's expense, with a dated proof of purchase and a returned material authorization (RMA) number supplied by weBoost. weBoost shall, at its option, either repair or replace the product. weBoost will pay for delivery of the repaired or replaced product back to the original consumer if located within the continental U.S. This warranty does not apply to any signal boosters or kits determined by weBoost to have been subjected to misuse, abuse, neglect, or mishandling that alters or damages physical or electronic properties. Failure to use a surge-protected AC power strip with at least a 1000 Joule rating will void your warranty. All weBoost products that are packaged with other weBoost accessory products are intended for resale and use as a single unit, and such product kits are required to be sold to the end user or subsequent reseller as packaged. The "de-kitting" and sale as a standalone product of any one or more components of such a product kit is in violation of weBoost's warranty. No "de-kitted" product will be eligible for return for any reason. The sale of separate, not-kitted cable, antennas, and other accessories is allowed and fully warranted.
